Travelogue for the Tri-Cities Washington Region

What is a travelogue? The dictionary defines the word travelogue as "a film, video, or piece of writing, or a lecture accompanied by pictures, video or film, about travel, especially to interesting or remote places, or about one person's travels."

This section deals with photography collections, video presentations, and travel articles about Tri-Cities Washington and other nearby communities in Southeast Washington and Northeast Oregon.

Arid Lands (a film)

An award winning film, Arid Lands, focuses on the environmental and cultural history of the Mid-Columbia Basin. The film tells the story of the changes that have shaped this landscape, from Hanford nuclear production and federal irrigation projects, to more recent forces, such as environmental cleanup, housing development, and tourism. A wonderful photo essay, The Columbia River - A Photographic Journey, explores Lewis & Clark's Columbia River - "200 Years Later." According to Lyn Topinka, the journey "includes over 2,500 images of geographic areas and interesting items along 330-plus miles of the Columbia River, covering the area seen by Lewis and Clark in 1805 and 1806."

In Steppe

In Steppe is a cultural/ public affairs television program that broadcasts in the KTNW-TV viewing area, a region in central Washington known as a shrub-steppe. The program is "in step" with the communities surrounding the Tri-Cities, bringing positive news about people, places, events and issues to viewers. Producer and host Lucy Luginbill is a long time resident of the Tri-Cities. A new episode of In Steppe airs on KTNW-TV 31 and Tri-Cities cable channel 10 the first Thursday of each month at 8:00 pm. The programs repeat the following Sunday at 10 am and 7:00 pm. Previous episodes are available for viewing online.

North American Highways

North American Highways, a travel agency in England, offers both a Washington and Oregon Vintage Wine Tour. The Washington tour lasts 12 nights and covers about 665 miles between Seattle and this region. Several nights are spent in both the Yakima Valley and in Walla Walla. Northwest Journeys

John Crancer, an Emmy award recepient, hosts Northwest Journeys, which shows 30 minute features about the Northwest each week. Shows have been produced about the Prosser Balloon Rally and the Southeastern Washington wine industry that you can view online. The show airs every Sunday at 4:30pm on Yakima KAPP 35 and Tri-Cities KVEW 42.

Northwest Travel Magazines

Northwest Travel Magazines publishes both the Northwest Travel Magazine and the Oregon Coast Magazine. They also published the 2006/2007 Vacation Guide to the Columbia & Snake Rivers Region (PDF). In addition, they also offer other visitor guides for this region.

Sam McLeod's Guide to Downtown Walla Walla

Tourism Walla Walla is sponsoring the production of several videos for posting on YouTube to promote tourism. These videos feature Steve Johnson who plays the role of Sam McLeod. The first video is about Sam's attempt to shoot Sam McLeod's Guide to Downtown Walla Walla for his friend Larry, showing him Walla Walla's beautiful downtown.

Two other videos that have been produced and published on YouTube include Sam McLeod's Guide to Art in Walla Walla and Sam McLeod's Guide to Walla Walla Sweet Onions.

Note: Sam McLeod, the literary alter-ego of Steve Johnson, has authored several books and maintains a website.

Scenic Byways

Experience Washington, the official site of Washington State tourism, describes several scenic byways that are worth taking a drive including the Lewis & Clark Trail where you can follow in the footsteps of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, the Palouse where you can follow the route of Native Americans, pioneers and settlers, the Yakima where you cross through the Columbia River plateau in the shadow of Mt. Adams, and the Yakima River Canyon which is an alternative route to Interstate 82 between Yakima and Ellensburg.
